Help! (Question for Computer Savvy Types)

Patience got me a 2 terabyte external hard drive for Christmas. The purpose is to have a dedicated drive from which to edit and render my film. Before opening the box, I noticed that this hard drive only has a USB 2.0 port, which gave me pause. I couldn't imagine anything less than Firewire being serviceable for video editing and real-time effects rendering. After doing a little research online, this seems to be the case. So today she went to exchange the hard-drive for something with a Firewire port, but Best Buy apparently only has one, and it costs around $300 -- far more than she was planning to spend. The guy at Best Buy offered her an alternative, which is a Seagate USB 2.0 hard drive, along with an "adapter" that makes it Firewire compatible. The adapter can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/2333mpt My question is whether this is actually going to give me Firewire speeds, or if it's simply an adapter that's going to throttle my connection. The guy at Best Buy assured her that it gives me full Firefly speeds, but I've been burned by the minimum wage "experts" at Best Buy enough times to seek a second opinion.
