The root definition is certainly religious but it's used figuratively all the

And Palin is, in theory, *primarily* a Christian and only secondarily American
-- at least, that's what she *should* be, if I am to take her faith seriously.
 
Well, if she were a Mormon, given their literal belief in its sacredness, I'd be
siding with you. As it is I'm not sure.
