I suppose this is as good a place as any to vocalize something that's
been brewing in my mind for the last few years. I really, really
dislike this reductive, score-card prediction-making that so many
critics engage in during Oscar season.

I would soooooooo much rather see people who know something about film
actually *talking about* the most notable films of the year, and *why*
they should or should not win, rather than *whether* they will. When
one starts by simply eliminating films for this statistical reason or
that, we end up with is something like, "So I guess that leaves XXXXXX
as the Best Picture winner." Really? Fascinating. *rolls eyes*

I realize my criticism comes from an oblique angle, as the
express(ed?) purpose of these articles is to make predictions, not
start discussions. And yes, I know, it's a harmless game. Just seems
like a rather boring one. The studios have already made the Oscars a
horse-race for their industry -- let's not egg them on.
