The pension plan is a part of their compensation right now. What's been
said is that they *are* paying into their retirement plan, through their
labour. It's just not as visible as many would like.

**sorry, but no. That is not the same and you know it. This is the
position that my cousin took, and it is brutal rationalization, nothing
more. The fact is that the pension they will get far exceeds what most
people look forward to, and those pension packages are bankrupting states.
Having them contribute would at least offset it somewhat, and not degrade
the final vestment. No one has proposed (that I know of) that they lose
their pensions.

If it is compensation for the work they do, then they contribute by working.

**that is just silly.

If the full amount for the retirement plan was deducted and their base
salary was nominally higher to cover that difference, the net effect would
be no different.

**then why don’t they do that?

**and in that case also, they need to immediate shut up about being so
underpaid. Let them publish their *total* compensation number when they are
complaining that they are paid less than the private sector.

**So let's have a discussion about public employees being over paid when we
see their entire compensation package and see how much of a victim they are.
