I totally agree, but at the same time, when I had issues with my daughter in her final years, the high school teachers were really not helpful.  She was whiney and defensive and more concerned with finding excuses why it was not her fault that she was fixing it, including bitching at me about strike related issues (they had gone on strike the previous year).

 

And yet, at same time, at the same school, were some of the finest teachers I have ever met.  So my beef is why we cannot encourage more of the one and less of the other.

 

So sometimes even with engaged parents it is difficult because the educators are not there to educate. 

 

But all that aside, yes, the state run daycare mentality is a HUGE issue in public education.

FWIW, for all the problems with the education system, I think teachers get too much of the blame.  A child’s education is the parent’s responsibility and too many have abdicated their roles as their children's primary educator.  That isn’t about homeschooling or an anti-public school rant, rather an observation that far too many parents drop their kid off or put them on a bus and figure they are done and now it is the schools job to teach their kid.  If a parent cares that little about their child’s education how can we expect the child to have a different attitude.  It is unrealistic to expect teachers to overcome that.

Yes.  This will be my 18th year.  Combined with the four years I attended as a student, I've been at Elgin High School over half my life.  

 

Tenure is dying a slow death, but it's time has come.  Bad teachers need to be fired, but defining what "bad" means is not as easy as it sounds.  I think most teachers will embrace it if the mechanism they come up with is fair and takes into account more than just standardized test scores.

 

Yes, I've seen Waiting for Superman, and it’s both completely true and frustratingly naive at the same time.  Same vibe I felt after watching An Inconvenient Truth.
