FWIW, for all the problems with the education system, I think teachers get too much of the blame. A child’s education is the parent’s responsibility and too many have abdicated their roles as their children's primary educator. That isn’t about homeschooling or an anti-public school rant, rather an observation that far too many parents drop their kid off or put them on a bus and figure they are done and now it is the schools job to teach their kid. If a parent cares that little about their child’s education how can we expect the child to have a different attitude. It is unrealistic to expect teachers to overcome that. Mike F. Combined with the four years I attended as a student, I've been at Elgin High School over half my life. Tenure is dying a slow death, but it's time has come. Bad teachers need to be fired, but defining what "bad" means is not as easy as it sounds. I think most teachers will embrace it if the mechanism they come up with is fair and takes into account more than just standardized test scores. Yes, I've seen Waiting for Superman, and it’s both completely true and frustratingly naive at the same time.
