There are always general exceptions -- pregnant women don't have to fast at all, for example -- and there are sometimes specific exceptions too (e.g., because I never drink wine to begin with, and in fact I don't like the stuff, my priest said quite happily that I could drink a certain something else on Lenten weekends instead).
