Like I said no system is without flaws.  But you could exempt basic necessities 
such as food, (the way many states do), to address the claim that it would be 
regressive.

And I don't buy that it benefits the wealthy.  The wealthy buy a lot of stuff 
and but more expensive stuff.  


But until then, remove the cap on the FICA tax.  If nothing else a serious 
threat to do that would get those in power real serious, real quick about fixing 
the clusterfark that our system currently is.

Yea, I have heard people advocate the fair tax for all those reasons.  I think 
it has potential, but then again people already claim sales taxes hurt the lower 
income disproportionately, so I don’t expect that to change either.
 
At least with a baseline flat tax in theory everyone shares the load.
 
Of course, the real problem is with how the money is wasted by the government, 
but that is another argument.

I suppose it would depend on the flat rate you establish.  But any taxation 
based on income is a form of extortion.  I know that is whacko talk but the idea 
that your labor, at least a portion of it, is repugnant, to me at least.

I suppose no form of taxation is free from flaws but at least with a consumption 
based system you have some control over what you are being taxed.

Cut the charitable-giving deduction too?  Thereby reducing the amount that 
people give to charities to take care of all the social programs that even the 
government doesn't have enough money to pay for, etc.?

And speaking personally, I rather appreciate the fact that we get a tax credit 
and/or benefit not only for having children (i.e. for raising the next 
generation of taxpayer, which is something our societies with their low birth 
rites might want to encourage), but for our son's disability.
