In other words, I think Obama was as surprised as every other reasonable person that this silly conspiracy theory gained any traction at all, and when some major media figure started fanning the flame, he rolled his eyes, and put an end to it. That's not a "strategy," it's just what anyone would do. **I agree. He assumed he could manage it and continue to marginalize the right wing as crazy birthers.
