I'm not taking sides but FWIW, I don't think Bruce was being preachy at all. Even if I disagree with his, (to me), cavalier attitude about more govt spending. While it is entirely possible, (probable), that not enough spending has been done on transportation infrastructure in the last few decades, there can be no argument that govt. revenues and spending have increased exponentially, (if you don't like hyperbole substitute "way too much") over the same period. The fact that the requisite money has not been spent on transportation is the fault of govt., (and the people for voting in the morons and wanting the govt to be the big nipple in the sky). I don't want to reward that bad behavior by giving the govt. more money. The govt. should at least operate like a business in that it doesn't spend more than it takes in or incur unsustainable debt. There is sufficient revenue to improve the infrastructure, but it means that stupid an inappropriate spending needs to be cut. I think a unified view of govt. revenue and spending is essential, so I reject separating any spending/programs from spending/programs as a whole. It would be one thing if the revenue and spending were being done by different govts/entities, but it isn't so treating like it is enables the rewarding of bad behavior by the entity receiving and spending it.
