Maybe I need *in*sensitivity training. The thing is that I see the whole good bad aspect as an unnecessary meme that focus on a single element without taking all factors into consideration. I bought a car that gets great mileage but even though many hybrids average less than 5 miles more per gallon (and some actually less) they enjoy a tax break and I do not. They get preferred parking at some malls, and I don't, all because of a label, "hybrid". EV are growing and there are actually ways they can power their cars free and not even pay their own electric bill, which I think is unfair. So there is an artificial disparity, and rather than intensify it, Obama's suggestion is at least consistent across the board. I think like you that the tax is a rotten idea, but in terms of fairness, at least it is. It is not encouraging good or bad behavior, unless the users of hybrid or EVs feel they deserve yet another pat on the ass for not buying a conventional car.
