That's a completely different statement. Saying that changes to the 1949 lines must be mutually agreed to is directed a the Palestinians - IOW they must accede to them in order to have peace with Israel. The 1967 borders are indefensible, the Arabs proved that by invading them. Practically speaking demanding Israel go back to them is tantamount to declaring open season on Israel - which if you believe what the Palestinians, Iranians, etc. have said, does result in genocide for Israelis. I think Netanyahu's response should be to tell us that they'll consider going back to the 1967 borders when we give back Mexico or all the land west of the Mississippi. They have far more justification for keeping their borders than we do for keeping our. My first time defending someone... ... My first time defending someone... Apparently for both sides. And Yes...Bush did support this: President George W. Bush adopted this same formula. In 2004 he gave then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon a letter saying that the United States recognized that Israel would not return to the 1967 lines and that it would annex large settlements near its borders. But Bush also declared after a 2005 meeting with Abbas that U.S. policy was that “changes to the 1949 armistice lines must be mutually agreed to.” Since the 1949 lines are the same as the 1967 lines, Bush was, like Obama, saying that the old lines would be the starting point. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/post/obamas-mideast-peace-gaffe/2011/04/19/AFyl0R7G_blog.html Thom http://thomwade.wordpress.com/ http://www.cafepress.com/Thomwade http://www.in-one-ear.com _______________________________________ "I want a song to learn and sing, of a life requited."-Echo & the Bunnymen -----Original Message----- From: Karl Swenson <[email protected]> To: 'DADL (off topic)' <[email protected]> Sent: Fri, May 20, 2011 12:07 am Subject: Re: [DADL-OT] Fwd: Wow... So....is this a policy flip? http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/obama-speech-backlash-call-reinstate-1967-mid east-borders/story?id=13639200 "Prime Minister Netanyahu expects to hear a reaffirmation from President Obama of U.S. commitments made to Israel in 2004, which were overwhelmingly supported by both Houses of Congress," the office wrote on Twitter. "Among other things, those commitments relate to Israel not having to withdraw to the 1967 lines which are both indefensible and which would leave major Israeli population centers in Judea and Samaria beyond those lines." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2011 9:41 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DADL-OT] Fwd: Wow... My first time defending someone... Well, I asked exactly what was so terrible about Obama's speech...noting it was similar to Bush and Clinton who both agreed that the 1967 border with some exchanges was the best way to go. Israel has not disputed it either. So what was so bad. His response was to ignore it. So I asked for clarification about what was so terrible about the speech. No answer given-except to ask why I supported the genocide of the Jews. I pointed out that that was a cheap shot, unfair (imagine if I countered a pro-lifer by simply saying "Why do you hate women?") and said I was out of the discussion. His response? Good, because I clearly had no idea what I was talking about (in spite of him never enlightening me, merely making baseless accusations. Then I posted the same comment (naming no names) I posted here about my surprise that the proper response to sincere questions being accused of supporting Jewish Genocide. His response? To call me an idiot and STILL not offer a defense of his reasons. Oh, and call me out for mis-spelling Israel. It was just to much and his unwillingness to dialog thoughtfully, as we have in the past made me decide it was time to axe him.
