My wife took her sone to see it in 3d and bemoans a complete waste of money.

I have not been to a theater in at least 3 or4 years, and I am not likely to go any time soon.  My tv's and dvd/BR players suffice for me.

I wonder if this explains my experience with Thor.  I saw in the backwoods that is Ironwood, MI and attributed the lousy picture quality to aging equipment/lack of upkeep, but I wonder if they had the 3d print and were showing it on a 2d projector or vice versa.  It was noticeably dim and a tad fuzzy - not the crisp clear picture you expect in a theater.

And it definitely affected my opinion of the movie.  Upon reflecting it was a quite good comic book movie, fun, engaging, mind numbing, etc. but at the time I was pretty much "meh", not bad but glad I didn't pay for it, ("private screening").

I knew it! This article explains all. I've seen Thor in glorious 2D twice, once on opening weekend, and again two weeks later (in a different, larger theater). I've been saying that I prefer 2D to 3D because the image is brighter, but the print was noticeably darker and less vibrant than the first time around.

3D is a plague. We need to kill it now before it kills the experience of going to the cinema to watch movies with other people.

*The Boston Globe* reports that AMC, National Amusements, and Regal cinema chains are leaving 3D projector lenses on for 2D movies<http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/articles/2011/05/22/misuse_of_3_d_digital_lens_leaves_2_d_movies_in_the_dark/?page=1>.

This means that the projected image is polarized and far dimmer than it should be. The chains won't acknowledge that they're doing it, but one quoted insider says its an "unspoken" corporate policy.

Given that your HD TV set shows it just fine, and your living room doesn't smell of weaponized butter, aren't they driving customers to piracy? Try this for irony: one reason operators hate changing lenses is reportedly because of crippling DRM on Sony's digital projectors, which "will shut down on you" if a mistake is made when resetting the system. So, they just don't change them, because serving a ruined product is better than serving no product at all.
