Theatres have been notoriously bad at using the proper brightness for 
years anyway, no?  3D is just their latest excuse for under-projecting, 
but I don't think eliminating 3D would solve the problem.

BTW, I saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean in 3D yesterday, and found it 
very very dark ... but I was also annoyed by the constant orange-and-teal 
colour scheme, especially during the nighttime scenes, which I don't 
remember noticing in the earlier movies.
