The lamps dim over time rather than blow out, so to save costs they  
probably wait as absolutely long as possible to replace the lamp.
If it is anything like my projector, they just don't want to spring  
for a new lamp.   These lamps are very expensive (mine for my tiny  
projector runs over $300), I can only imaging what their equipment  
costs.
