I think it is safe to say that the evangelical camp of protestantism, in general, is ignorant in matters of early church history and doctrinal issues that go beyond what they hear in the pulpit on Sunday morning. I don't think pointing that out is a bad thing or a sign of a superiority complex. OTOH declaring that a significant number of self professed christians are "about as far away from authentic Christianity as Christendom has ever seen." does strike me as a bit elitist, or condescending. And it certainly begs the question of what "authentic Christianity" is and what one has to do/say/believe to be an authentic christian, while at the same time suggesting that the declarant has the definitive answers to those questions. That being said I know when I refer to young earthers I can be very condescending. But I wouldn't question the authenticity of the christianity, even if I am questioning their intelligence.
