Just a couple of corrections Soulman & no disrespect intended. Carol Kaye used a Fender short scale bass with a P bass pick up. I think it was a Fenser Mustang. I've met Tiran Porter a while back & in the early days of the Doobies, he used a Gibson EBO & an EB3 or 4L not sure on which one it was. I have a real rare Bootleg video of the Doobies { with Tom Johnston} playing Long Train Running from the early 70s & Tiran is diffidently using a Gibson EBO. I don't know what he's playing now. But, my bass tech used to be the Doobies guitar tech, from the Captain & Me, until Living On The fault Line. Next time I'm in Campbell, Ca., I'll ask Mark what Tiran is playing these days & get back to the group with the info.

My personal favorite, GFR's Mel Schacher played a Jazz before switching to a custom ZON, and I believe that Stanley Clarke spent time with the Jazz before going to Alembic. Rock legend Geddy Lee plays one to this day.

Now, the Jazz bass, is a cool Fender, but it has three factors I don't like about it. One, The neck is too narrow somewhat. It starts off small, then, gets wider as you move down. That's a unusual feeling to me. Of course, P-basses do have wide necks, but after the 70's, Fender change that, with a cross between a J neck and a P neck, and I even can tell you the width,1.625. Very nice, indeed. Two, the body. The body to me is bigger that the P's. Now some bass players I know, say the body is OK to them, but, to me, no, its' something to do with the Strat-like body shaping Leo changed when He re-designed the P bass, in 1957. Which brings me, to my last point, the pickups. First, their single coil, not humbucking. Now, I had a guy tell me in NYC, that the concept, that Leo was trying to suceed with, is when the player, turns up both pickups, then the J, "acts" like a P.Well, when Joe Osborn(of LA sessions fame) got his prototype Jazz, He only used the front pickup, because adding the rear pickup, gave his sound more midrange, that He didn't care for. And, He had the one, with those "stack knobs" on it. Now, don't get me wrong, The Jazz, is a great pucking bass, just Larry Graham, or Marcus Miller, and a great fingering bass, thank you very much Jaco. But for the groovers that I learned from, James Jamerson, Chuck Raniey, The "Rock", Francis Rocco Prestia, George Porter Jr., Ronnie Baker(from Philly), and The Duck, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and The very groovy lady, Carol Kaye, all used P's, that made me a believer of the groove. Oh, I forgot to add to the list , Tiran Porter, and Jimmy Fielder from BST. Soulman
