Thanks for the info, Jim.  I tried a chromatic myself, about three years 
ago, and although it didn't have tonal problems (until a friend dropped 
it just once on a carpeted floor), it demanded ridiculous amounts of 
labor to make reed-valves, and of course, no chords at all.  That was my 
learning experience to teach me that chording is very important to the 
style I have been given.  It has also made me rather curious about some 
of the slideless chromatics out there; I have heard reports that some do 
chord...:-)
