Dear Big harmonica folks,
May I share some chording experiences with a typical 21 or 24 tremolo harmonica. ( I personally like Tombo). I learned tremolo harmonica in Asia since I was at junior ages, my chording techniques is inherently oriental . There are different ways I do:-
1. The Simplest
Cover 3 or 5 holes , 1st position note always on the right side while blow and draw all notes being covered. We can play simple chord , but is not necessary always harmonized.
2/ Tongue blocking
Cover 5 holes ( or 7,9 holes). 1st position note always on the right while the tongue is blocking the 3rd and 5th hole. By doing this, the Melody will be played along the right end of the mouth. Chording at various rhythm will be performed by moving the tongue outwards and inwards the 3rd and 5th holes. If you wish you get more bass sound, cover 7 or 9 holes etc... Again , the chords are not necessary harmonized, especially playing along with other instruments. However, the technique do well for most folk songs.
3/ Broken chord
cover 7 holes for blow note, cover 9 holes for draw note. Use tongue blocking to make an octive ( ie.low c and mid C together) Then, move forward to make 5th, ( low E and Mid C togeter) , then move forward to make 3rd ( low G and mid C together) etc. the way a broken chord can be performed. The technique is quite challenge especially for fast music.
These are the three main chording on tremolo harmonica, although there are modifications of the above to create different style.
I want to hear from the big harmonica friends about your ways to do chording on tremolo harmonica.
Best Regards
Sam
