I do the same, Dave. When I find a song that I like that I want to learn, I listen to over and over and over till I have not only the tune memorized but I have a "feel" for it or I have the "groove". Then I start to learn it by ear with the audio or if I can find a midi file for the tune and I can use it in Melody Assistant to get the tab & notation.
