Hi Jim,

the name fields use 6-bit for the ASCII characters, and is limited to a 
few special characters only. That means Kawai doesn't use ASCII, but 
probably a K5-specific character table, or something like ISO 6-bit. 
You'll have to do some reverse-engineering.
On Windows XP, you can use the Atari editors through the STeem emulator, 
otherwise, there's the Kfuenf librarian 
http://kfuenf.org/en/librarian.html. There's also MidiQuest which has 
both an editor and librarian, but it isn't free.

As far as LCD upgrades/fixes go, I haven't fixed that problem myself, 
but there's an inverter at Digikey that you can use in the K5 if you 
drill a few holes in the PSU board, and the LCD backlight is available 
in a few places. For the analog output stage, I haven't spent the time 
to see if I could reduce the noise levels yet. About the ROM upgrades, 
all the orders that were placed through my website have been shipped 
within a reasonable amount of time (less than a week).
