I would like 2 aspects to Eric's answer,
although this is not absolutely necessary :-)))


- arpeggio is Italian and means something like
"harp style" - maybe this provides for an idea, too.

- nowadays, an arpeggiator is usually a step sequencer
which does not play fixed notes but the notes (maybe in
different octaves) which you currently are playing on
the keyboard.

GEs usually tend to sound more musical and less mechanical
than arpeggiators.
