Auto Karma

Hi,
Having a hard time getting the auto karma to work.
Next to tempo, it says ext.Don't I need to set a tempo for the karma
funtion to work?
I tried the karma at the store, when I would change programs and hit a
key, a beat would start on its own so I would prss the on/off button
next to the latch button to turn it off. How do I get to that setting?
Going nuts!!
No idea what Im doing.
