Technology is the same because it is physics. But as Andras Szalay wrote here (as I remember) FTP has 1000 more power and it has faster algorithms so it can better predict errors, mistakes etc. At the end FTP plays better because it is cleaner. I had Yamaha G-50 and it was fast (=Axon without piezzo support) but Roland GR-55 with was slower was more playable. 
TriplePlay is as fast Axon and it works even if you play sloppy.
