If my memory is correct, the audio matrix 16 from 360 systems came out around 1985 or 86. If you have your hart set on something as nostalgic as that system good luck.  Otherwise you could check out the Switchblade GL 16X16 from Soundsculptures. Just Google that and read up. That system can route anything to and from anywhere. It's like alien technology, reversed engineered. 


My studio partner has a Switchblade GL 16x16 and they really are extraordinary for automating complex pedal setups. He is running a crazy number of different distortions, delays, rotary speaker pedals, Pog-2 micro synths etc - which he has set up to select in combinations from a Ground Control Pro board. Since the Switchblade uses VCAs, the balancing of signals, and even MIDI control of feed paths can be automated, or pedal controlled. However, this thing is super expensive and the software is pretty crappy, especially if you use a Mac. 


If it were my project, I’d use a 16 channel audio interface like a Focusrite Pro-40 or similar, and some standard routing software like MainStage for the Mac, or Max/MSP or Pd, or Bidule etc. About the only thing the Switchblade has over that approach is some relay switching, but that can be achieved pretty simply with a highlyliquid MSA-R board or two.
