I’ve been very impressed with the tracking; fast and accurate, and I like that it’s wireless. I’ve never owned a Roland system — just played a bit with them in guitar stores — by my impression was that the Fishman was faster. I’m the author of a pitch-to-MIDI app (MIDImorphosis); the Fishman is *much* faster. I sort of see my app as a “gateway;” play around with the MIDIfied guitar concept for cheap, and then jump to a hardware system if it seems like something that’s of interest. You have to be careful on bridge height — the Fishman pickup fits on my Danelectro, but was too tall to fit on the Telecaster (which is actually my main guitar). I could do modifications to make things fit, but I really don’t want to open up that can of worms. The “receiver” has to plug into a USB port somewhere, and then that’s what can generate tones. I’ve used it both with my Mac, and with an iPad. I recall hearing that Fishman was going to create a separate synth module — not sure if they’ve done it.
