Hi Chris..
Thanks for the reply.
I contacted moforte over the week-end and got an immediate reply on Sunday.. (excellent service)iPad 2 is as you say,  old and will only support 9.3.5 iOS..
However, Pat Scandalis at moforte, assured me that the GeoShred program will work perfectly on 9 series OS. although I'll have less effects available to run simmultaneously.  GeoShred will support iPad 2 until at least the autumn of this year or until Apple tells them to stop support..

I think I can live with reduced fx, and heavy distortion, heavy flanging, and endless slapping echos don't interest me at all..
I'm mainly interested in the clean sitar, and zither, and the classical and steel geetar-type sounds with a little chorus and some light reverb, and tweaking the envelopes a bit maybe..
I can always route it via a sequencer by patching the audio out into a desk and then into Cubase 7 or something, or via desk aux. sends, to external hardware fx..  I just hope that the glass touchscreen is playable and it feels a little bit like an instrument ..

Thanks for the tips about streaming midi on the iPad Chris.  I shall have to get up to speed with that.

best regards
