But do consider the original iPad ("iPad 1") useless.

Note that the iPads 2 and 3 feature the obsolete 30-pin connector, whereas the iPad 4 and later feature the smaller and reversible Lightning connector.
A 30-pin female to Lightning male adapter is available for connecting 30-pin accessories to a Lightning iPad, but not the opposite.
The main difference between iPad 2 and later ones is the resolution of the screen. (You see the same picture, sharp or "unsharp".) Besides, newer models have considerably more powerful processors. The apparently small amount of RAM doesn't pose a problem.

I must correct an earlier supposition of mine: even the iPad 4 is 32-bit, but it does run iOS 10.

As I remember it, iOS 9.3.x was intended to get the best performance on the older hardware (as well as the latest), so it's no use looking for older editions of iOS. Moreover, lots of earlier bugs had been quashed.
