Hi,
I don't know if this is a useful suggestion based on your needs and
abilities, but a raspberry pi and a USB MIDI adapter would make a good
inexpensive intermediate MID box. I've used puredata ( or pd-l2ork these
days ) to read my FCB-1010 foot controller. I haven't actually output
MIDI since I use the signals internally but don't see any reason it
shouldn't work.
