Excuse my ignorance:  But 0.6ms added to 4.0ms gives you 4.6ms.  I doubt 
many/any of us [well, at least me; 78 yo] could hear the difference.

yeah but 0.6ms added to say 4 ms can make a huge difference. it is also 
a very wide stretch (feeling wise) from a real guitar sound through an 
amp (i.e. 2 metres away) to a synth sound with the same latency. not 
sure what the reason is for this, but i have experienced it a lot of 
times, be it in the studio (depending on the music even 4ms on the 
headphones become unplayable), with a guitar to midi system or some 
softsynths with a keyboard controller.
