I'm with you, there's really no replacement for the SB Classic.
The tricky thing with the adapter is that you have to test it while
connected to the SB. It may give a perfect voltage when tested on its
own but buckle under the load when trying to drive the SB.
It's not uncommon for the adapters to fail but replacements are fairly
easy to find, with a bit of luck that will get you going. Unfortunately
the Classics are growing old and it seems they are getting more prone to
develop internal problems that require more electronics skills to
diagnose and repair, I have had two fail in the last two years.
