I don't want to keep you hanging. For the repair that was underway, I
sped things up by replacing the mainboard with one I had in stock from a
previous repair where the CPU board was broken. So I paired it with the
customer's CPU board and everything else, and now it works like it
should again with no issues whatsoever. Kept the non-working mainboard
here for future diagnosis.
So the problem of missing playback remains to be tracked down somewhere
on the mainboard, however, I am currently moving to a different location
and have no time left for investigation. And as Transporter CPUs are
unobtanium nowadays, I'm also a bit hesitant to put one of mine at risk
when I troubleshoot the defective mainboard. It may take some time until
I get to it, don't hold your breath...

For everybody in the US: there's an eBay offering that may be very
attractive for you in case you have this sort of trouble. It's a
new-old-stock factory mainboard with a new CPU board in place. Probably
stuff that was produced but never mounted as Logitech discontinued the
Squeezebox series too soon. The eBay item ID is *363616064110*, and it
costs *only **$274,95* plus shipping. Inside the US, that is. I have
purchased two of these and effectively ended up paying over 350 Euros
for each because of customs, import tax, handling fees etc., so this is
only recommended for US residents or people who don't care much about
their budget.
What you won't get is the Wi-Fi board but you can reuse the one you
already have. It's a drop-in replacement that immediately brings your
Transporter back to life, and selling the defective leftovers from
before will certainly get you some money back.
The seller is also ao good choice for other replacement components such
as front panel boards fully populated with brand-new displays
(*$148,75*), which is nice if you have fading displays or any other
malfunction that may be related to the front panel PCB. It's way cheaper
than repairing the existing ones nowadays because Noritake have raised
their pricing for displays so drastically. As long as there is still
supply for these boards, it's a good chance to save some bucks. He is
also offering the 5V power supply board ($39,95) that is so prone to
fail, might be the cheapest source for that on US soil, too.
