I don't exactly have a lot of credibility on this topic, considering how
wrong I was, the last time I came up with what I thought was a brilliant
solution. But I think I have found something that works now.

I created a playlist of files that are not currently in my library, and
after a full a full rescan I am able to play all files in the playlist,
but they do not show up in the library. I used LMS to create the
playlist: I picked a player that wasn't in use and cleared its queue,
then loaded the files into the current queue and saved it as a playlist.
LMS recognizes that the files are not part of the library, so it
designates them at tmp files. Here's a typical entry:

Code:
--------------------
    #EXTURL:tmp:///home/pi/LocalMusic/Other%20Music/Seasonal/Xmas2/Marcus%20Roberts/Prayer%20for%20Peace/Marcus%20Roberts%20-%20Prayer%20For%20Peace%20-%2001%20-%20Prayer%20For%20Peace.mp3
  #EXTINF:590,Prayer For Peace
  tmp:///home/pi/LocalMusic/Other%20Music/Seasonal/Xmas2/Marcus%20Roberts/Prayer%20for%20Peace/Marcus%20Roberts%20-%20Prayer%20For%20Peace%20-%2001%20-%20Prayer%20For%20Peace.mp3
--------------------

Compare that to an entry from a playlist of files that are included in
the library:

> #EXTURL:file:///home/robbh/Music_collection/Classical/Artists/Los%20Angeles%20Guitar%20Quartet/For%20Thy%20Pleasure/09%20-%20Purcell%20-%20Rondeau.mp3
> #EXTINF:85,Purcell - Rondeau
> /home/robbh/Music_collection/Classical/Artists/Los Angeles Guitar
> Quartet/For Thy Pleasure/09 - Purcell - Rondeau.mp3

This seems to be working for me, so I hope it will work for you, too. It
might be interesting to try loading one of your existing playlists (of
files not in the library) into a player, then save it again under a new
name. In an ideal world, LMS would handle the conversion to tmp files
for you.

Usually running latest beta LMS nightly on Raspberry Pi OS with virtual
players (Squeezelite and Airplay bridge). Occasionally using SB Radio,
Boom or Classic.
