anything is possible, but this is very unlikely.   If your HDD works on
laptop but not on rPi, as pointed out earlier, this could be a power
problem.  rPi not providing enough power to the USB drive.  You could
get a separate power supply to feed the drive.  Or maybe just a new HDD.
These things don't last forever, and one needs backups anyhow.  I use
about 2 year old WD 4TB USB 3.0 portable drives on my rPi4B and rPi3B+
without any separate power and don't have issues. But maybe modern
drives are more efficient with power?  I do use official rPi power
supplies on all the rPi units.
