The other thing that I'm having a hard time figuring out is ntpd.  If
you look at the log again I believe it initially fails to connect to
mysb because of the date [69-12-31 19:00:51.4575]

I have ntpd enabled on the "extras" page but it never updates my time. 
When my pi boots I have to set the date with something like this "sudo
date -s "2022-09-15 15:51:00" and then run "/usr/sbin/ntpd -q -p
216.239.35.12"  The idea is that the offset is so large that I have
manually set the date first then run ntpd -q.  From what I can tell ntpd
-q doesn't do anything.

I don't have any issues reaching the NTP server:
