How about if you press and then quickly release the button, it goes to the
next/prev track, but if you press and hold, it scans. Separate >| and >>
buttons might be better though.

I very seldom feel the need to scan around within a file - I wouldn't mind
an extra step to access the scan feature. Maybe this should be a function
that you access by pressing some button that pops up a thermometer bar and
time indicator. Scan would work like a CD player - you hear little 500ms
clips as you go, then after you let go of the button for a few secs, it
would go back to the normal display.
