I tried using a trivial "gcc -shared *.c" and it failed
miserably...

It is now :)

You're right, I did have a few (understatement) errors in it. I
fixed

them and put a new version in CVS.

A few things to watch out for:

1. The server's IP
address is currently hardcoded in the main()

function - so you'll need to change it for your setup.

2. Beware of the pseudo-streaming code. I
have not tested anything to

do with it yet, so be careful there (but feel free to contribute).
