Unpause causes static

Running 1.6, when I pause playback, after a few seconds the display goes off
and the player shuts down. When I unpause it, the player comes back on and
playback starts in the same place but the sound is all crackly and full of
static. Is this a known issue?

If I pause it and unpause it without letting the unit power itself down,
then playback comes back fine.
