This would also be worthwhile for doing other things (time display,
stock ticker/news displays, etc.).

Alternately, if we could have an alternative to dropping to a 
blank screen...i.e, instead of blanking the screen after a timer
expires, have it hook into a time display, or news ticker, or 
$function_of_choice.  (This may already be possible, I just haven't
looked at that section of the code).
