Works for me as a partial solution, but, as Dean has pointed out, it
breaks the circularity of playlists.

Agreed, which is why I alluded in my earlier post to maintaining a
history of what's been played independent of the viewable playlist.
Putting XMMS on random (which is basically the 'continuous shuffle' I
mentioned earlier) will cause it to jump to a random position in the
playlist after each song, but hitting 'back' will still return to the
previously-played song properly.  (This independent history also
means that when playing straight through a playlist, the user can
jump to a song manually, then hit 'back' and return to where he was
before performing the jump.)
