Perhaps, but not, IMO, as annoying as putting my entire collection on
shuffle and knowing that, once I hear a song, I'm guaranteed not to
hear it again for a several weeks (unless I periodically unshuffle/
reshuffle manually).

I have two issues, one of which may have already been solved in
server versions newer than the one I'm running:

1)  Random play, in the XMMS sense.  This is not the same as playing
sequentially from a shuffled playlist.

2)  Inability to delete a song from a shuffled playlist without
unshuffling, deleting, and reshuffling.

The first is the one currently under discussion, the second is the
one which may already be fixed.

I would prefer to be able to let the computer do the work
automatically rather than having to constantly pay attention to the
player in order to determine when I need to unshuffle/reshuffle the
playlist.

Agreed, which is why I suggested adding a random play option rather
than changing the way that the existing shuffle function works.
