I can answer your questions, but I'm sure you'll also get some replies from others SliMP3 owners on the list. Being a Slim Devices employee, my opinions may be a little biased. :) > Can it handle very large mp3 collections well? Some people are using it with collections in excess of 300GB. We build indexes of the MP3 library in RAM, and this allows for extremely quick browsing and searching. The typical response time for the remote when scrolling up and down through song listings is less than 20 milliseconds. Entering a very large directory, or creating a playlist of several thousand items can sometimes take a second or two, but for normal browsing there is no lag. On other players, there is a noticeable lag even with the simplest functions, because the device has to do a lot of work on its embedded processor. The reason the SliMP3 is faster is because we take advantage of the speed of your PC to drive the user interface, instead of trying to do everything in the player. > Any specs available on the actual audio performance, such as DAC > resolution, sampling rates, any upsampling etc? Does the mp3 decoder > produce output at 24bit or higher resolution? The output from the MPEG decoder is 16 bits per sample, at 44.1 (CD) or 48Khz (DAT), depending on the sampling rate of the original MP3. If you want more technical information, you can find full specs on the DAC here: http://www.cirrus.com/design/products/overview/detail.cfm?d=29 And the MPEG decoder here: http://www.micronas.com/products/documentation/consumer/mas3507d/index.php > Lastly, anyone done any comparisons with the Audiotron or RIO or the > HP product (Sonic Blue?) ? The SliMP3 is a fairly new product, so as yet there are no third party comparisons of these three main contenders. I don't have time to keep up on all the competing products, but I know that there are a number of people on this list who owned Audiotrons and Rios before purchasing the SliMP3.
