Run-together tracks

One thing that annoys me about all current jukebox
applications is that they are fairly dumb about handling tracks that run
together. To use a real example, I have a live album, where the music is
interspersed with ‘talking bits’, each in their own track. In
general, the banter in each ‘talking bit’ is an introduction or
anecdote about the song that immediately follows, so the two tracks are only
really meaningful if played together, in sequence.

Now, in random or shuffle mode, those tracks get split up,
which is a shame. It would be nice to find a way to designate a track as ‘only
play before’ or ‘only play after’ another track, that the
user can specify. So I would designate my ‘talking bits’ as ‘only
play before’ the relevant song. I might also make the reverse
association, but since the song makes sense on its own (but the talking bit
does not) I would probably just make the association between talking bit and
song. The idea would be that when “random” play is turned on, the
randomizer would take account of these associations and not split up the
related tracks. It might make for an interesting algorithm :-)

Maybe that could be done using ID3v2 tags, or with a
separate configuration file that the user can edit. Maybe at a later stage,
there could be a GUI for setting up the associations.

Food for thought.
