I finally got it working again: - I replaced the firmware chip with one that contained the 1.0 firmware. With that firmware the player worked fine with server 1.8. It just had the weird characters on the screen again. - I replaced the firmware chip again with the chip upgraded to 1.2. The player worked with the server-1.8. Then I tried it with server-2.0. This worked as well. I do not know why the player became silent but now its working. Even the strange characters on the screen ( and the potential firmware corruption) seems to be gone.
