Mike, It's done in the MPEG decoder. There's a volume matrix which lets us set balance and levels going out to the DAC. It also has bass/treble controls, but we're not using those currently. Regardless of whether the volume control is being done after the DAC or before, it's always best to run your sources at full volume, and do the volume control in your receiver. This is true of any source, CD, DAT, VCR whatever. The higher the output level, the better the s/n ratio you get. We include volume control in the SliMP3 as a convenience to those using amplified speakers w/o remote control, but it's not the best way to go if you have a receiver.
