Have you thought of using a graphical vfd (like the empeg has)?
"128 x 32 dot matrix vacuum fluorescent display, 2 bits per pixel" it really
looks quite cool ... 

How much would it add to the cost of the slim?

Our next product will be the SlimDimm (I'm trying to think of a less silly
but equally catchy name). We're going to have prototypes in about 2 weeks,
and a complete development kit in 4-6 weeks or so.

The SlimDimm has the same mechanical dimensions as a standard SODIMM
laptop memory card. It incorporates all the main guts of the SliMP3
player, minus MPEG decoder, DAC, and display.

We'll have a development kit which includes a power supply, SODIMM socket,
wire-wrapping area, and some connectors, buttons, and LEDs for a sample
application. (probably the sample application will be a data acquisition
system like you're suggesting). This is a big part of the motivation for
opening our firmware.

The SlimDimm will be offered to hobbyists and OEMs at a considerably lower
price (TBA) than any Linux-based Ethernet modules.

I can't comment on a future SliMP3, except to say that changing the
SliMP3's hardware is not likely any time soon.
