The SliMP3 takes about half a second to boot from a cold power-on. Then
there's a splash screen which shows for 5 seconds, and then a menu which
asks if you want to change the network settings.

After that, it usually takes about 1 second to do a DHCP lookup (if you're
using DHCP) and another second to find the SliMP3 server (if you're using
Slim Discovery Protocol). Then it's ready to go.

If the server isn't available when the SliMP3 starts, it's not a problem.
The player's display will say "Looking for SliMP3 server", and will keep
retrying ever 2 seconds until the server is ready.

By "it", do you mean the server or the client? The client is pretty much
stateless. You can reboot it and it will come right back to where you left
off (except the current stream will not resume until you press play).
If you reboot the server you lose state. However, if you're using a
laptop, you could probably use its sleep feature instead of rebooting, no?

It's 2.1" tall (2.25" with the rubber feet), 1.9" deep, and 8.25" wide.
