Huge playlists

I'm CCing slimp3-users - hopefully we can get some more opinions. As I see
it, the role of the playlist should be just to list the songs you actually
intend to play. It should be the browser's job to make a huge collection
manageable, using hierarchical indexing, searching, etc. There should be
no need to have enormous playlists, unless you're really going to listen
to 50K songs in one sitting. :)

The big piece that's missing right now is that we don't have an efficient
way to do random play of huge folders.  That's the only reason why a
playlist ever has to get huge in the first place.

The challenge is that in order to do random play, you have to get a list
of all the items and then shuffle the list - right now we're using the
playlist to do this, and that doesn't work too well for thousands of
tracks.

One solution might be to prompt the user when adding directories of more
than 500 files (that number would be configurable, of course). The choices
might be:

add 500 random items
add the first 500 items
add everything

Regarding the command line interface: the question has come up several
times on both the -dev and -users lists, and the answer depends on how
much work you want to do. The easiest way to add custom command-line
controls would be to write wrappers for the web interface, using lynx,
wget, or fetch.
