Even though I liked Brian's solution (thanks) and used it partially, 
I thought the same thing about the TV connection (I already set up 
the remote for my TV).  Since the SliMP3 (JVC DVD) doesn't use the 
Voluume buttons, I just swapped the "7" and "9" buttons for 
the "volup" and "voldown".  Now when I press the 7 and 9 buttons, the 
SliMP3 Server gets the "voldown" and "volup" commands and we are both 
satisfied (temporarily).  FYI, I also set the volup and voldown to 
increments of 10 rather than 1 to speed up the process (patients is a 
virtue I need more of).
