Yes, that is essentially what I have accomplished by
setting up a distributed file system (DFS) share in
Win2K with virtual links to another Windows XP
workstation and my RH Linux 7.3 server.  My point is
that I shouldn't need to do this.  The very nature of
Perl should allow me to specify as many directories as
I wish, with no regard to how they are organized, and
have them combined in a useful fashion without the
shenanigans (sp?) that I have to go through now. 
Using shortcuts or symbolic links is fine if you wish
to browse by genre, artist or album as the server code
already combines this information in the appropriate
context. However, if I wish to browse by music folder
then I am required to pay a lot more attention about
where I place a particular artist's album across
multiple shares since my manual placement of that
album becomes that much more important.  And what
happens when I run out of space on one of my servers? 
I need to go and move artist's folders to another
server, or start renaming symbolic links or DFS
shares, instead of just placing the MP3s on a volume
that has free space and forgetting about it.  

By using the DFS sytstem I have in place right now, I
am essentially creating the symbolic links you are
referring to...and it does work, but it lacks
flexibility the that should exist.  For instance, like
a lot of folks I organize everything by Artist, Album,
Song (there are some miscellaneous items as well, but
they are not important).  I feel that I should be able
to point the server to multiple folders--in this case,
shares on three different servers--and let the server
do the sorting so that it appears that I am browsing
one cohesive music folder.

As you, and several others have stated, I can sort of
accomplish this by using shortcuts or symlinks, but I
actually have to add another layer of obfuscation to
my collection to do so--I now need to split my folders
alphabetically by creating symlinks (or DFS shares)
that point to virtual folders like 0-g, h-p, and q-z
on these different servers.  Why?  This flies in the
face of all that is Perl as far as I am concerned:) 

Admittedly, I am jealous of folks running iTunes and
the builtin SlimP3 support of iTunes that has been
added recently.  And if I had the time to become more
familiar with the Slimp3 server Perl code, I would
make the appropriate changes myself, but right now
this just isn't possible.  And thus, I continue to
whine in hopes that the powers that be will see my
point and add it to the LIST of future additions.
